East Somerville's Dutch Bicycle Co. designed and hand-built their very first city bike "all to inspire confidence for city riding." In collaboration with Geekhouse Bikes, and gathering input from riders of what they wished they always had in a bike, the DBC finally created the perfect bike for city commuters: the Swift. While it may look like an ordinary bike, they have modified it to create a bike that "is comfortable for long rides, handles well at low speeds, climbs hills with ease, and responds quickly to the driver." The upright seat, modeled after European city bikes, the innovative balance and stability, as well as the modern building technique has created a sustainable, lighter and bicycle that will create a smooth ride wherever you find yourself riding.

opened the Dutch Bicycle Co. in 2001. They dedicated
their efforts to creating the perfect city bike, both for
the city itself and its commuters.
The geniuses behind this creation included the lead designers, Piper & Huma (graduates of Wentworth & MIT), the lead mechanic, Buckly, and their team of designers, engineers, wheel builders and mechanics. Each bike is handbuilt and takes from 4-6 weeks from date of order, however they are expecting to extend the time to 8-12 weeks due to the Spring's busy season.
What's Next?
Currently the DBC is working on creating a specially designed women's bicycle. They have been bringing women into their shop to asses the ergonomics behind this task in order to ensure the best bike possible!
